Nostalgia: A Naveszn Production

August 26, 2019

/näˈstaljə,nəˈstaljə/  noun – a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.

*The production of this project was heavily inspired by the amazing show, Euphoria.*

Good times always come in flashbacks. When we think about the amount of memories in our memory bank, it can be slightly overwhelming. It’s impossible to call on each one. Sometimes we accidentally time travel…nostalgia. Ever smelled something so strong that you immediately remember the very moment you first experienced it? It’s like when I smell the rain hitting the concrete when I’m home; it reminds me of the Saturday mornings when my grandma use to water her flowers and porch. Or the smell of my mom’s perfume, Sweet Sugar, that reminds me of the times when me, Malikah, Deauna, Amber, Imani and Niara use to go to University Mall on the weekends in middle school. Or the smell of sizzling corndogs when we use to go to the fair on Student Days during the winter. The mind is beautifully poetic. It’s amazing to be able to call on those moments when things seem to be going wrong. But it’s even better to know that there is no cap to creating amazing memories. There’s no limit to the treats of life. Yes, there is a balance of the good and bad. But in the bad times, we time travel.

Last week I had the chance to visit Atlanta and  stay/hang out with two of my childhood bestfriends, Amber and Malikah. I met them at Williams Middle School in Tampa, FL. Amber was the first friend that I made the first day of 6th grade in Mrs. Robinson’s class. But Malikah and Amber had been bestfriends from elementary school but soon me and Malikah would become close friends. Ahhh…the memories.

“We should have taken our chances back then, when we were young and beautiful and didn’t even know it.”

Take your chances. Don’t live in the past…only cherish it for what it was. But most of all, seize the now. Pray for the future. Keep on dreaming. Cherish your friends, your family, your experiences that taught you so much. Like Sankofa, only look back to reach forward.
