Jay, “Shakelife” is a rapper, Native Tampanian, and community activist. He’s been through it but nothing has been heavy enough to break him. His words of encouragement reach the Tampa natives in such a real and genuine way through his Instagram posts as well as his raps. A genuine soul is all we want to hear from sometimes and Jay is just that. I’ve had the chance to talk with him about life, community, and so many other topics. His advice is real.
“You know how I feel though? Like that happened to Nipsey but we all gone die. Even me coming from the hood, I done seen so many of us….not just in my hood but round the world you hear in the media, so many of us die, especially young black men dying…at the hands of our own and not only dying by the hands of our own, when you look at what they died behind, it was really about nothing. Something petty. ”
“We just can’t be showing fake support. And let’s be real about it. Don’t be doing it with the intent of “Oh I just want to look good.” Naw I’m doing this shit because I want to see us up. We been oppressed so long that it just still seems like we haven’t gotten it. Look at the results that we’ve gotten throughout the years of us feuding amongst each other. Putting each other down. What have we accomplished? What have we gotten out of that? Nothing. So if we’re seeing that leads to nothing, let’s go down a different direction.”
